March 27, 2008

The Full Story

Chairman of the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA), Dr. Omer Thomas, has said that technology will be at the forefront of the agency’s operational restructuring process.
Dr. Thomas, who was speaking at a JIS Think Tank session at the agency’s head office in Kingston today (March 26), said that the use of technology is pivotal in promoting efficiency in the agricultural sector, in addition to fostering improved food supply. As such, he said, the organization will be looking at enhancing the island’s food production capacity by utilizing “modern techniques such as embryonic transplants, improved artificial insemination and DNA fingerprinting in order to trace livestock.”
Additionally, he noted that the organization will be profoundly involved in the use of protected agriculture including greenhouse technology, shade and tunnel houses, hydrophonic and airponic technologies as a means of boosting production.
In order to provide the technologies to the nation’s farmers, the Chairman explained that synergies will be formed with other agriculture-based outlets such as the Bodles Research Station in Old Harbour, St. Catherine.
“Technology will also be used in the day-to-day operations of field officers as they will be outfitted with electronic gadgets that capture and transmit data in real time to a central processing area for storage,” he informed, adding that the data will be used to analyze market trends as well as assist the transfer of technology to farmers and farming communities island wide.
