Teachers Urged to Upgrade Skills

Principal of the St. Elizabeth-based Santa Cruz Primary and Junior High School, Mrs. Ivorine Dwyer, has called on the country’s educators to always seek to upgrade their skills and attain knowledge that can assist the teaching and learning process.
She noted that students stand to benefit from new information gained by teachers.
“As things change, it makes sense to focus on the process of learning to learn. teaching must focus on equipping students with the skills to search for and to responsibly use information in the ongoing pursuit of education,” Mrs. Dwyer said.
She was speaking on Sunday (April 11) to teachers participating in the masters of education programme in Teaching and Learning at the Catholic College of Mandeville. The programme is offered in partnership with the St. Mary’s University of Minnesota in the United States.

Mrs. Dwyer commended the student teachers, who presented their research papers on the day. “May you find the experience worthwhile and rewarding and may you be inspired to continue to add new dimensions to the already existing sphere of knowledge,” she urged.
She also lauded the Catholic College of Mandeville for collaborating with St. Mary’s University to make “a higher degree programme of this nature affordable and accessible to the Jamaican teaching force.”
