TAVO to Honour Persons for Int’l Volunteer Day

November 18, 2005

The Full Story

The Trelawny Association of Volunteer Organizations (TAVO) continues to honour unsung heroes in the parish for their dedicated contribution to nation building through volunteerism.
To this end a banquet and awards ceremony will be held at the Starfish Hotel on Monday, December 5, under the patronage of the Custos Rotulorum of Trelawny, Royland Barrett.
TAVO’s Chairman, Carlton Gordon, told JIS News that seven persons would be gaining recognition at the function.
“The areas that will be given special consideration this year are, HIV/AIDS support, the development of youth, the advancement of women, care of the disabled and elderly, protection and preservation of the environment, social development at community and national levels, promotion and preservation of our culture, and the promotion of peace and outstanding service in disaster assistance,” he informed.
The theme for this year’s International Volunteer Day is ‘Volunteer and Secure Jamaica’s Future’ and the guest speaker will be Dr. Hopeton Dunn, Chairman of the Creative Production Training Centre (CPTC) and Director of the University of the West Indies (UWI) Telecommunications Programme.
“The official sponsors for this banquet and awards ceremony are Air Jamaica, Bank of Nova Scotia (Falmouth Branch), Trelawny Credit Union, Point Village Resort and the Environmental Foundation of Jamaica in collaboration with the Council of Voluntary Social Services (CVSS),” he said.
Noting that the aim of the banquet was to honour awardees, Mr. Gordon stated that it would also serve as a fundraiser for a central information centre in light of the current developments within the parish.
He is appealing to the residents of Trelawny to support TAVO in this venture and help in securing a bright future for the parish and the country as a whole.
Worldwide, December 5th is celebrated annually as International Volunteer Day having been designated as such in 1995 by the United Nations General Assembly.
