Support Labour Day Projects in Communities and Parishes

Jamaicans are being encouraged to show they care by supporting projects in their communities and parishes that will benefit children on Labour Day.
Speaking at a JIS Think Tank at the agency’s head office on Half-Way-Tree Road on May 13, Chairperson of the Projects Sub-committee, National Labour Day Planning Committee, Dorothea Clarke, said the focus this year is on children because they are “the most important factors in our nation.”
Miss Clarke urged citizens to play their part by engaging in projects despite the economic meltdown situation.
“I think that this Labour Day is one way for us to come together as a people regardless of your community and where you live. It is a time for us to really band together and really try and support projects that would benefit our children,” she said.
She noted that children with challenges and those in homes should also receive special attention. “We have to show that we have not forgotten them, that we care for them and we love them,” Miss Clarke added.
The chairperson said that all 14 national projects have been confirmed and registered with the National Labour Day Secretariat at the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture.
Among the projects are: The construction of a playfield in Stewart Town Primary in Trelawny; renovation of the 3D Centre for mentally challenged children in Knockpatrick, Manchester; and refurbishing of the Pringle Home for Girls in Carron Hall, St. Mary.
“Labour Day is just one day, but we are hoping that some of the programmes that would have been started would be continued for the benefit of the (children),” Miss Clarke said.
National Labour Day 2010 is being observed on Monday, May 24 under the theme: ‘Our Children.Show Them We Care’.
Persons interested in contributing to the national projects should contact their local parish council office.
Projects should be registered with the Social Development Commission (SDC), the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC), and the Labour Day Secretariat.
