The Full Story

Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites, said his Ministry has made submission to the British Government for assistance in the building of a high school in South East St. Ann.

Addressing students, teachers and parents at a grant contract signing ceremony for upgrading of the Breadnut Hill Primary School in the parish on Friday (December 4), Rev. Thwaites said the submission was made in light of the pledge made by British Prime Minister, David Cameron, to provide 360 million pounds to the Caribbean for infrastructural work and human development.

“When I heard the part about human development, I got really excited,” the Minister said.

“I had made a promise…to build a second high school in South East St. Ann but wasn’t sure as to where we would find the money. So when Mr. Cameron came and said the British Government would make that money available for work to be done in the region, especially Jamaica, we wasted no time in putting in a request for some educational projects we would like to do,” he said.

South East St. Ann, which includes Moneague, Beecher Town, Breadnut Hill and Claremont, is the largest constituency geographically in the country. Ferncourt High in Claremont is the only high school in the constituency.

“What we want is grant assistance. When we have partners, whether they are local or from abroad, it’s a win-win for education,” the Minister said.
