Students Urged to Submit Entries for JIS Heritage Competition

The Jamaica Information Service (JIS) is urging students to complete their entries for the Heritage Competition and submit them online before the deadline of Sunday, November 6.

The JIS Heritage Competition, which opened on September 5, now comprises three categories – Essay, Poster and Photo.

The Photo category was added this year and targets registered tertiary-level students in an accredited Jamaican institution.

Chair of the Heritage Planning Committee and Manager of Special Projects at the JIS, Andrine Davidson, said that the decision was taken to expand the annual competition to include tertiary-level students because of the agency’s need to engage viewers and listeners in this very important demographic.

The inaugural photo competition invites photo enthusiasts at the tertiary level to seek out and capture images of champions in the making and great sporting moments at the community, club or other levels.

“We want the images to reflect the spirit and strength of Jamaica’s potential and prowess in sports. We are excited about the inaugural theme, ‘I am a Sports Champion’, which we believe will pique the interest of the college- and university-level photo enthusiasts, and we are expecting outstanding and engaging shots,” Mrs. Davidson said.

Meanwhile, the JIS Heritage Essay Competition, which is in its sixth year, is open to students at the primary level, nine to 12 years old. For this year, students are required to answer the question ‘Who is Your Favourite Jamaican Sportsman or Sportswoman and Why?’.

The essay competition requires the child to write a 400-500-word piece, which will be judged on relevance to the topic, originality, accuracy and analysis of research data, writing style and language skills. Essay submission should also include the Title page and Bibliography or List of References. At least one of the references must be a JIS source.

The Heritage Poster Competition, which was launched two years ago, targets students at the secondary level, who are required to submit entries for the Poster Competition in one of two categories – graphic designs and illustrations – focusing on the theme ‘Jamaica’s Rich Sporting Heritage’.

Posters will be judged on interpretation of the topic, originality, creativity, artistry and presentation. They must be no larger than 11 inches by 17 inches, and done in landscape or portrait orientation. The topic for the poster competition is ‘Jamaica’s Rich Sporting Heritage’.
