Students Receive Scholarships from CCCU

Four students who are savers at the Churches Co-operative Credit Union (CCCU) were awarded scholarships during an awards ceremony, held at the Knutsford Court Hotel on August 24.
Three students were also given gift certificates valued at $16,000 each from Sangster’s Book Stores, under Churches Co-operative Credit Union’s ‘Ready… Set for September back-to-school promotion’.

General Manager, Retail Systems and Operations at CCCU, Quilston Harrison said the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) scholarships and bursaries are synonymous with what “we would like to instil in young people.”
“We would like to see them save, create and evolve and come to some point in their lives and in their careers when the habit they start as young ones, benefit both others and themselves,” Mr. Harrison said.
He urged the students to build relationships and to “keep your savings going, keep your person growing and keep getting better at the good things in life.”
Under the GSAT scholarship award, each student will receive between $20,000 and $100,000 each year for five years. Students are required to maintain a 70 per cent average and are required to submit annual reports to CCCU.
In his address, broadcaster and motivational speaker, Derval Malcolm emphasised that is critical for the students to develop integrity and proper character traits during their years at school.
“Your integrity must be guarded jealously, as your integrity is what determines whether when you speak, people listen,” Mr. Malcolm said.
He also stressed the importance of getting an education. “As long as you are of school age you go to school to learn and if you have any other ideas about doing other things, go elsewhere. School is not a perfect environment and that is why you will have to be focused on your education,” Mr. Malcolm tod the students.
In her response, GSAT scholarship awardee Tianna Porter expressed her appreciation to CCCU, Sangster’s Book Stores and other sponsors who have contributed to the awards programme.
“Thanks for affording us this wonderful opportunity. I speak for all of us when I say this is just the beginning of greatness and from here on the possibilities are truly endless,” she said.
The four students receiving the scholarships are: Kevon Reynolds, Janice White, Tianna Porter and Calesia Mowatt. Chijindu Eke, Malik Eldimire and Makayla White are gift certificate winners, while Kemar Cummings was awarded with a bursary.
