  • Director of Energy Economics and Planning at the Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology and CARICOM energy focal point Jamaica, Yvonne Barrett-Edwards, said the competition aims to promote “a culture of energy consciousness and to see the extent to which students at the secondary and tertiary levels are aware of energy matters in the country and in the region”.

Director of Energy Economics and Planning at the Ministry of Science, Energy and Technology and CARICOM energy focal point Jamaica, Yvonne Barrett-Edwards, said the competition aims to promote “a culture of energy consciousness and to see the extent to which students at the secondary and tertiary levels are aware of energy matters in the country and in the region”.

The competition, which closes on November 30, requires students who are CARICOM nationals to submit written letters or essays to the CARICOM Secretary General expressing a vision for advancing the region’s sustainable energy transition.

Essays from secondary-level students must be 700 words; while essays from tertiary-level students should be 1,000 words.

Entries must include the name, age and proof of nationality of the student as well as the grade or form of the student.

A teacher or parent must submit the entry/entries to caricom.energy@gmail.com on behalf of secondary-school students. These entries should include the parent’s and teacher’s names and contact details.

Winners will be announced on Facebook at the end of January 2018. Prizes to be won include a golden pen, laptops and projectors.

The regional competition is being done for CARICOM Energy Month, which is recognised in November, under the theme ‘Rethinking energy, shaping a resilient community’.
