Students Attend Values and Attitudes Seminar in St. Mary

The need for young people to develop a greater sense of responsibility in their pursuit of personal and national development was the major focus of a one day seminar held for high school students in St. Mary, at the Port Maria Civic Centre in Port Maria on February 4.
The seminar, which was organized by the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC), in collaboration with the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (PCJ) and the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS), was aimed at instilling proper values and attitudes in the young people.
A total of 174 students from Tacky High, Brimmervale High, Carron Hall High, Iona High, Islington High, St. Mary Technical, Annotto Bay High, and Guys Hill High Schools participated in the seminar.
In addition to focussing on the need for young people to develop proper attitudes and values in order to become responsible adults, the seminar also enabled extensive discussion on the role and function of the CAC and the operations of the JPS.
Among those making presentations were Lawrence Frazer, Project Manager of the Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) and Vereica Bennett, Communications Consultant in the Office of the Prime Minister, both of whom spoke on the topic ‘Values and Attitudes – Responsible Youth’.
Ruthlyn Johnson, Corporate Community Relations Officer at the JPS spoke on the ‘Safe Use of Electricity’ and Richard Rowe, Regional Officer for the CAC addressed the topic: ‘Preserving the Environment through Energy Conservation’.
Dolsie Allen, Chief Executive Officer of the CAC told JIS News that she was pleased at the response of the students to the event.
She expressed confidence that the deliberations would go a far way in instilling proper values and attitudes in the country’s young people.
Commending the students of St. Mary for participating in the event, Mrs. Allen encouraged them to not only ensure that they make their lifestyle exemplary by embracing proper values and attitudes, but also make themselves crusaders for the advancement of that cause, by trying to influence their peers and others in the society.
