Student Leaders Receive Computer Equipment Thanks to Jamaica/KOICA Partnership

Kingston, March 4, 2010 – Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, the Honourable Olivia Grange, MP, handed over 22 computers and other equipment to the leadership of the National Secondary Students’ Council today (Thursday).
The equipment, which included: laserjet printers, multifunctional fax machines, UPS, line conditioners and printer ink cartridges was sponsored by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) which has been assisting the Ministry’s youth development strategy, through the National Centre for Youth Development (NCYD).
The equipment will serve fifteen (15) schools.
Minister Grange said she “expected the NSSC to use the equipment well in the furtherance of the work of the organisation.”
On April 17, 2008, KOICA and the Government of Jamaica signed an agreement described as the “Records of Discussion” with the objective of encouraging youth participation in sound social activities. Another of the objectives is the empowerment of student leaders in the National Secondary Students’ Council.
Director of the NCYD, Mrs. Roberta Brown-Ellis said she was “glad that the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture and KOICA were able to help the NSSC in building its ICT capacity”.
President of the NSSC, Andre Stephens, thanked Minister Grange and KOICA for the equipment and said it would be put to full use in the work of the NSSC.
The NSSC is the highest body advocating for student affairs at the secondary level. The NSSC receives technical and financial support from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture through the NCYD.
