STATEMENT BY PRIME MINISTER P.J. PATTERSON ON THE TRAGIC DEATH OF THREE CHILDREN IN ST. MARY

The triple murder of Sue-Ann, Dwayne and four-year old Shanice in Killoncholly, St. Mary is a stark reminder that there are those in our midst, who have resorted to the highest level of brutality. It is a tragedy of unspeakable proportion.
This is not an isolated incident and follows on what is becoming a trend of vicious attacks against our nation’s children. I warn again that no country can tolerate this level of violence that is being perpetrated against its people, including our women and the elderly.
While the police must move swiftly to bring the perpetrator (s) to justice, I reiterate that the police cannot win the fight against crime and violence on their own. I repeat; it will require the combined efforts of all Jamaicans to rid the country of this deadly scourge.
Both the state and community must be resolute and relentless in the fight to restore respect for life, decency and put an end to intolerant behaviour.
I am instructing a multi-sectoral team comprising persons from the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Social Security to visit the family and offer practical and meaningful support to them.
On behalf of the government and all Jamaicans, I extend my sincere condolence to the parents on the tragic loss.
