St. Thomas Reconnected to Kingston

October 1, 2010

The Full Story

The National Works Agency (NWA) says St. Thomas and sections of Harbour View have been reconnected to the capital city, with the repair of the temporary ford across the Dry River in Harbour View, which was washed away during this week’s torrential rains.
Chief Executive Officer of the NWA, Patrick Wong, told a news conference at the Ministry of Transport and Works in Kingston, today (October 1), that the work teams were able to effect the repairs within 36 hours of the damage occurring.

Motorists crossing the ford at the Dry River in Harbour View. The approaches, which were damaged by heavy rains this week, have been repaired by the National Works Agency (NWC), reconnecting St. Thomas with Kingston.

Mr. Wong also clarified that it was not the temporary bridge that was damaged, but the approach to the structure.
“[The bridge] withstood everything that came across. What was destroyed was the approach, which was just sand and gravel, so that the motorists could come across. That is what we reinstated, but what we did this time was to put some bigger boulders on both approaches for protection,” he explained.
The NWA is currently in the process of constructing a four-lane permanent bridge across the river, which is expected to be completed in July 2011, ahead of the next rainy season. Mr. Wong said the project, which is being funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), will also have pedestrian walkways.
