St. Thomas Celebrates Achievement Day on March 31

Teachers, 4-H clubbites and government agencies in St. Thomas are expected to participate in the annual Parish Achievement Day celebrations on Wednesday, March 31 at the Paul Bogle Junior High School.
The event, which begins at 8:00 a.m., is being organized by the St. Thomas 4-H Advisory Council, in collaboration with the 4-H Leaders Association under the theme: ‘Youth Exploring Agriculture Through Innovation and Creativity’.
Parish Development Officer, Michael Whitely told JIS News that clubbites participating in the event would promote a variety of dishes and beverages made from plantain. Plantain was chosen because of its versatility, he said, adding that there would be foods, such as plantain porridge, pudding, plantain chips, wine, jam, jellies, fritters and liqueurs.
Additionally, he said clubbites would have displays in areas such as home economics, agro processing, organic farming, solid waste management, apron and uniform making, art and craft skills.
There would also be educational displays on the National Screwworm Eradication Programme, National Council on Drug Abuse, the St. Thomas Parish Library, the St. Thomas Co-operative Credit Union and the Consumer Affairs Commission.
Competitions will be staged in home economics and agriculture, and there will be livestock judging before the actual event at the Robert Lightbourne High School on Tuesday, March 23. Judges will be drawn from the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA) and the Home Economics Department of schools from outside the parish.
Guest speaker for the function on March 31 is Hopeton Morrison, General Manager of the St. Thomas Co-operative Credit Union. State Minister in the Ministry of Transport and Works and Member of Parliament for Eastern St. Thomas, Dr. Fenton Ferguson; Executive Director of the Jamaica 4-H Clubs, Lenworth Fulton, and Dolores Henry, President of the National Leaders Association are also scheduled to bring greetings at the ceremony.
