The Full Story

Debris will be cleared from several beaches and towns in St. Thomas during a Hurricane Dean Clean-up project on September 29 and 30.
Prime Minister, Bruce Golding has designated the two days for an all-island beautification and clean-up exercise to remove debris left behind by Hurricane Dean on August 19.
The decision was taken at the first St. Thomas Hurricane Dean Clean-up Committee meeting held on (Sept. 24) at the St. Thomas Parish Council chamber in Morant Bay. The meeting was attended by Mayor of St. Thomas, Councillor Joan Spencer, Councillors and representatives from the Development Area Committees and the Social Development Commission (SDC).
Discussions focused on the availability of resources, selection of projects, and the mobilization of community groups and volunteers. Another meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 28 at the same venue.
“We do not have a lot of cleaning up to do, but I think the clean-up project is a good idea, and we will be mobilizing the people to come together to work for their communities,” Mayor Spencer told JIS News. She said the SDC will be sensitising members of community groups and youth clubs about the event and encouraging them to participate in clean-up activities in their districts.
Secretary/Manager of the St. Thomas Parish Council, Clinton Gordon told JIS News that the Council had removed a lot of debris after Hurricane Dean, so the two days would be used to collect garbage in communities and to clean sea front areas in Rozelle, Prospect, and Lyssons.
He noted that some $3 million was spent to clear blocked roads, and land slippage, and to remove fallen trees along the roadways after the hurricane.”What this clean-up will be doing is the clearing of debris that is still lying in communities not yet picked up,” he said.
The Secretary/Manager said owners of heavy-duty equipment and private sector entities would be approached to assist with refreshments and equipment. Additionally, he said, the National Solid Waste Management Authority has promised to provide dust masks, garbage bags and assign trucks for the collection of garbage.
Mr. Gordon appealed to residents to display a “spirit of volunteerism and community spirit” by participating in the event.
