St. Mary Marks Heroes Day with Floral Tribute and Awards Presentation

Residents of St. Mary observed National Heroes Day on (Oct. 15) with a floral tribute and awards presentation ceremony at the Claude Stewart Park in Port Maria.
At the function, three persons and three organizations received special awards for outstanding contribution to the development of St. Mary. They were Dr. Isaac Brown, Sheldon Peart, Louise Patricia Hill, Couples Hotel, American Caribbean Experience and Christian Services International.
In addition, 24 other persons from several communities in the parish were presented with tokens of appreciation for services in various fields including education, health care, community development, public service, religion, agriculture, music and sports.
With uniformed groups adding colour to the occasion, the proceedings were highlighted by the reading of the messages of the Governor-General, Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition and the presentation of tributes to the heroes by students from a number of schools.
The Governor-General’s message was read by Custos of St. Mary, A.A. “Bobby” Pottinger, while those of the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition were read respectively by Robert Montague, Minister of State in the Office of the Prime Minister, and Dr. Morais Guy, Member of Parliament for Western St. Mary.
The schools presenting tributes to the heroes were: Iona Preparatory for the Rt. Excellent Nanny of the Maroons; Martin’s Primary for the Rt. Excellent Sam Sharpe; Hillside Primary for the Rt. Excellent Paul Bogle; Port Maria Primary for the Rt. Excellent George William Gordon; Belfield Primary for the Rt. Excellent Norman Manley; Richmond Primary for the Rt. Excellent Sir Alexander Bustamante; and Zion Hill Primary for the Rt. Excellent Marcus Garvey.
The function was organized by the St. Mary Cultural Committee in conjunction with the St. Mary Parish Council.
