St. Catherine PCs Plans Stellar Awards Ceremony For Local Heroes

The Full Story

Local Government authorities in the parish of St. Catherine plan to recognize local heroes at auspicious ceremonies in their respective jurisdictions on National Heroes Day, Monday (October 18).

Mayor of Portmore, Keith Hinds.

Mayor of Spanish Town, Dr. Andrew Wheatley, says the celebration of Heroes Day usually has a ‘special flavour’ in Spanish Town being the focus of modern Jamaica’s history, and the ‘point of reference’ for major decisions or events, and citizens who have been contributing to the development of the parish, and Spanish Town in particular, have to be recognized.
“We normally give them a special mention and award them with a certificate or a plaque commemorating their efforts over the years,” he said.
Persons are usually honoured by the St. Catherine Parish Council in areas such as Education, Community Development, Sport, Gallantry and Religion.
In neighbouring Portmore, the island’s only independently elected Mayor, Keith Hinds, also plans to honour local heroes of the municipality at a special ceremony.
“We have community members that have served the community with distinction, and we feel it’s very important that we honour them,” he told JIS news.
Mayor Hinds noted that like Spanish Town, Portmore recognizes persons in several categories, and this year additional categories have been identified to capture a wider array of service to the community.
“We are honouring the disabled, and this year we are honouring persons for communication, for persons who are always supportive of the work we do at the municipality,” he explained.
Both Mayors said that, coming after the passage of Tropical Storm Nicole, the Awards should provide a lift for residents of the parish.
“I do believe so and it’s something to look forward to and take part in within the municipality.” said Mayor Hinds.
“It’s not about a reward or an award, it’s more about service,” said Dr. Wheatley.
