The Full Story

St. Catherine High School has successfully defended its National Secondary Schools’ Food and Nutrition Quiz title, topping six other schools to cop the national trophy and cash prize of $50,000, at the finals held recently at the Caenwood Centre on Arnold Road, Kingston.
Team member, Tashane Hinds, who was adjudged the individual champion student of the finals, was awarded a $10,000 book token/voucher and a plaque.
Second place went to Montego Bay High School from St. James, which received a cash prize of $40,000 and a trophy, while Marymount High School in St. Mary, which placed third, got $30,000 and a trophy.
Acting Chairman of the National Food and Nutrition Coordinating Committee of Jamaica (NFNCCJ), Mr. Eban Hutton, told JIS News that the competition, held since 1992, is open to all secondary schools, which have a food and nutrition programme up to fourth form.
The aim, he said, is to provide students with the knowledge and skills to practise healthy eating habits for sound physical and mental health, as well as prepare them for examinations in food and nutrition.
Mr. Hutton informed that the tournament is a precursor to the Caribbean Food and Nutrition Institute (CFNI)-organised Caribbean Secondary Schools’ Food and Nutrition Quiz, which will be held in October.
The elimination round will be conducted via teleconferencing at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus, and the finalists will receive an all expense paid trip to the finals, a tour of the host island, trophies, and cash prizes.
Jamaica’s team to the Caribbean tournament will be selected from among the members of St. Catherine High and the champion student from each of the six education regions.
Since the inception of the regional competition in 1996, two Jamaican schools – Aabuthnott Gallimore High in St. Ann and Ardenne High in Kingston- have won the competition, doing so in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
A total of 47 institutions from the six education regions participated in the month- long National Secondary Schools’ Food and Nutrition Quiz, with the six finalists earning their place after a number of rigorous elimination rounds. In addition to St. Catherine, Montego Bay and Marymount High, the other regional finalists were: Ardenne High School; Ferncourt High, St. Ann; and Holmwood Technical High, Manchester.
Each of the regional winners and first and second runners-up were awarded trophies.
The annual competition is held in collaboration with the Ministries of Health, and Education, with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as the main sponsor.
National Commercial Bank Foundation, National Meats and Food Distributors Limited, Jamaica Broilers, Tastee Limited, Jamaica Publishing House, and Grace Foods also provided support.
