St. Ann Should be Active on Labour Day

Director of Administration at the St. Ann Parish Council, Claudiah Carter, has predicted that Labour Day 2010 in the parish will be very active.
“We intend to kick off with our parish project, which is going to be at the Rhoden Hall Basic School, and that is situated in 8 miles into the Calderwood Division,” she said.
She noted that the parish will be concentrating on fencing the compound of the school to provide a more secure environment for the children, because of their tendency to run out onto the streets when vehicles are passing.
“We thought that this project would really show Jamaica that we care about our children, and show St. Ann that we have the children’s interest at heart,” Miss Carter said, noting that the theme for Labour Day 2010 is, “Our children. show them we care”.
Although only a few projects have already been registered, she noted that a number of organizations and service clubs have indicated that they will be carrying out work in various areas.
The Ocho Rios branch of National Commercial Bank (NCB) will be doing a project at the Ocho Rios Primary School, involving one of the classrooms there. The Kiwanis Club of St. Ann has also indicated that they will be rehabilitating the library at the Children’s Ward at the St. Ann’s Bay Hospital.
The St. Ann’s Bay branch of the Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS) will be doing a project at the infirmary, including the planting of trees and vegetables.
When JIS News contacted the Principal of the Rhoden Hall Basic School, Gertrude Parks, she said that she was very happy that the school would be given special attention on Labour Day.
“I am very glad for the fencing that will be put in place, because when the children go out in their break time I have to take a chair and sit outside to protect them from the streets, so I am very glad for this,” Mrs. Parks said.
The St. Ann Parish Council is appealing to residents of the parish to support Labour Day 2010 activities in whatever way they can, and help build the parish, and Jamaica at large.
Labour Day is celebrated on May 23 every year, but because this year May 23 falls on a Sunday, Labour Day will be observed on (Monday) May 24.
