The Full Story

The National Parenting Support Commission NPSC) and the National Parent-Teacher Association of Jamaica (NPTAJ) will be taking part in a special Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) meeting at the Horizon Park Primary School in St. Catherine on Sunday, February 5.

This is part of a collaborative effort involving the organisations and Member of Parliament for South Central St. Catherine, Dr. the Hon. Andrew Wheatley, to improve parental participation at schools in and around the Spanish Town area.

Director of Communication and Public Relations at the NPSC, Mikhale Edwards, told JIS News that “as parents get more involved, we tend to see greater attendance in schools and hence children are more prepared to make valuable contributions to society.” During the specially arranged PTA meeting, Mr. Edwards as well as President of the NPTAJ, Everton Hannam, will address parents, while Dr. Wheatley will deliver the main address under the theme: ‘Parental Involvement: A Key to Success’.  Mr. Edwards noted that Spanish Town was chosen because of the dynamics of the communities in and around the area. He noted that at the centre of social issues is the lack of parental involvement within the home, school and community.

“The collaboration between the NPSC, NPTAJ and Dr. Wheatley is a critical step towards transforming the lives of parents and, by extension, families living in that area.  “By educating parents on effective parenting strategies, advocating on their behalf as well as providing them with access to much-needed social services, we will see a marked improvement in their coping skills and overall quality of life,” Mr. Edwards said.

He told JIS News that the long-term plan is to extend this initiative to other parishes.

“We want to get political representatives at the local level to help us to start that dialogue as it relates to effective parenting and parents placing greater importance on playing their role in homes, schools and communities,” Mr. Edwards said.
