Spanish Teachers to Attend Four-Day Training Course

A four-day intensive training course for Spanish language practitioners will be held at the Shortwood Teachers’ College in Kingston from August 18 to 21.

The course, organised by the Embassy of Spain, will be conducted by the Cervantes Institute of Spain, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Youth and Information and the Shortwood Teachers’ College.

Lecturers at the teachers’ college, other lecturers for final-year students, as well as current classroom teachers (primary, secondary and vocational), with a minimum B1 – lower intermediate Spanish language competence level, are eligible to participate.

Minister of Education, Youth and Information, Senator the Hon. Ruel Reid, and Spanish Ambassador to Jamaica, His Excellency Josep Bosch Bessa, are expected to speak at the opening ceremony.

The Embassy of Spain indicated that the training programme is necessary, in view of Jamaica’s geographical location and the significant number of Spanish companies involved in the tourism sector.

According to Senator Ruel Reid, “the training course is quite relevant within the context of internationalisation and globalisation.”

“It underscores the importance of international certification of our Spanish teachers and we endorse increased collaboration of this nature with Spanish-speaking entities,” he added.

The course will provide efficient training in the Spanish language and methodology, in order to enable the participants to effectively assist their students to become good communicators while using the language in and outside of the classroom.
