The Full Story

Three students from South St. Andrew were awarded the Detective Inspector Delvin ‘Sarge’ Grant Memorial scholarship valued at $250,000 each.

The memorial scholarship was presented to Shamar Stewart who will be attending Wolmer’s Boys School, while the other recipients Felicia West and Nandi Richards will be attending the Immaculate Conception High School.

The tenure of the scholarship is subject to the awardees maintaining at least a ‘B’ average each year.

Twenty other students were also presented with one off bursaries valued at $30,000. They were also presented with book vouchers valued at $5000.

Member of Parliament for the constituency, and Minister of Transport, Works and Housing, Hon. Dr. Omar Davies commented that he was pleased with the performance of the students in the Grade Six Achievement Test.

“I want you to focus on the children as they give me very good reason to have confidence in the future of Jamaica,” Dr. Davies said.

He was speaking at the awards function, which was held at the Knutsford Court Hotel on August 21.

Meanwhile, Minister of Education, Hon. Rev. Ronald Thwaites urged the students to do well at the schools they were placed in. “Be happy where you are and do well there because the truth is many of the newer secondary schools are doing as well and better than the traditional schools,” Rev. Thwaites said.

He further encouraged the students to do their best in school and paying particular attention to English Language and Mathematics, the two subject areas of concern in the recently released Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations.

“Those are the two core subjects, very important and Jamaica is not doing as well as we need to in that regard,” Rev. Thwaites said.

He further urged the parents to ensure that their children do the homework assigned each day.

“Make sure, even if you do not understand the mathematics homework that you insist that they do the homework. Do not let any of these children go home and say that there is no homework. There is homework and there must be homework every day,” the Education Minister said.

Meanwhile, guest speaker at the function, Dr. the Hon. Barbara Gloudon noted that ways should be found to build the character of the students.

“If we do not in addition to the numeracy and literacy, find ways to build the character of these children then you would have just been simply wasting time. Also whatever we do, do not kill the creative spirit of our children,” Dr. Gloudon said.

In her response, Nandi Richards expressed appreciation on behalf of all the recipients.

“These scholarships mean a lot to us and will be of great help to our parents in getting us through our high school years. This scholarship will be of extra motivation for us as it will motivate us to work hard and even to go the extra mile so that later on in life we can contribute something to our Jamaican society,” Nandi said.

Detective Inspector Delvin ‘Sarge’ Grant was a member of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and while in the Protective Services Division, he was assigned to Dr. Davies. He was well known in the South St. Andrew Constituency and had a good working relationship with persons from all walks of life.

The memorial scholarship is open to students who live and, or attend school in the constituency who show outstanding achievement in the Grade Six Achievement Test and are involved in extra-curricular activities.
