The Full Story

Matters relating to the small business sector were discussed today (September 21), at an inaugural conference, staged by the Small Business Association of Jamaica (SBAJ), in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce, at the Wyndham Kingston Hotel.
Conference Chair, Bridgette M. Steele, who spoke at the opening , said the seminar is geared towards educating small business operators to make an input in small business policy, and most importantly, to provide an opportunity for networking amongst members of the SBAJ.
She said it is also providing a forum that will lay the foundation for facilitating dialogue on common issues as well as briefing many stakeholders in the micro, small and medium-sized businesses to exchange ideas affecting growth and development of the sector.
State Minister for Industry, Investment and Commerce, Hon. Michael Stern, in his remark, said the conference is a big step for small business development in Jamaica.
Noting that small businesses are integral to the growth and development of Jamaica’s economy and people, Mr. Stern said he was pleased that the event is “not a mere talk shop,” but a forum for discussion of serious issues affecting the small business sector.
“I believe this conference is an excellent opportunity for out-of-the-box thinking as we seek to address the challenges facing our small and micro entrepreneurs,” he said.
The conference was being held under the theme: ‘Jamaicans Taking Advantage of Business Opportunities’. It also featured booths set up by small business operators.
Several topics covered during the all-day event included: Financing Options for Small Businesses; Effective Marketing and Distribution; Government Policy for Small Businesses; Compliance and Regulatory Requirements for Businesses; and Business Development Services.
The event was sponsored by Flow, Guardsman Group, Jamaica Public Service, Power 106, XSomo, Music 99 FM, Jamaica Air Shuttle, Commonwealth Secretariat, and the CARICOM Secretariat.
The SBAJ was established in 1974 to represent the interest of small and micro business operators in Jamaica.
