June 26, 2009

The Full Story

Six students, who excelled in mathematics in the Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT), have been awarded scholarships valued at $50,000 each, by Kraft Foods Jamaica Limited, to help offset the cost of their secondary school fees.
The awardees, who are the top male and female mathematics performers from the island’s three counties, each gained 100 per cent in the subject area.
From the county of Cornwall, the awardees are: Sonya Faulknor of Corinaldi Avenue Primary in Montego Bay St. James, who will be attending Montego Bay High and Vivian Vickers of Grange Hill Primary in Westmoreland, who will be going on to Munro College in St. Elizabeth. From Middlesex the recipients are: Christine Cowan of Kensington Primary, who will be attending Ardenne High in Kingston; and Richard Rose of Portsmouth Primary in St. Catherine, who has gained a place at Campion College in Kingston. The awardees from Surrey are Ta-Gaye Orr and Moesha Henry of St. Jude’s Primary in Kingston, who will both be attending Campion College.
Assistant Chief Education Officer for the Student Assessment Unit in the Ministry of Education, Sharon Neil, addressing the scholarship luncheon held yesterday (June 25) at the Four Seasons Hotel in Kingston, lauded the students for their outstanding work.
She noted that mathematics has traditionally been thought of as a difficult subject, and so the outstanding performance of the awardees in the subject “makes the achievement…very special.”
She commended those who contributed to the students’ achievement, noting that positive support was a critical component to the academic success. “Thank you parents, teachers, and schools for the support you continue to give to the educational process as we all partner together to ensure improvements, not only in mathematics, but in all the subject areas at the primary and the secondary level of the system,” she stated.
She further commended Kraft Foods, for awarding the scholarships, noting that the Ministry of Education actively encourages public/private partnerships in the education system.
Business Development Manager at Kraft Foods, Kirk Reid, noted that the annual scholarship award was to recognise outstanding performance in mathematics. He urged the students to continue to work hard and to make their families proud.
Scholarship awardee, Moesha Henry, whose GSAT scores averaged 96.6 per cent, expressed gratitude to all those who assisted and encouraged the students in achieving success.
“We will continue to work very hard throughout our educational journey so that we will not only make you (Kraft) proud but also the other people, who have helped us to achieve these scholarships,” she promised on behalf of the scholarship winners.
Just under 50,000 candidates sat the examination on March 26 and 27, 2009.
