The Full Story

Six outstanding citizens of the County of Cornwall have been honoured with the Governor General’s Achievement Awards, for their contribution to the development of their communities and for helping to improve the lives of others.

Governor General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen, made the presentations at an awards function held on Thursday, August 29, at the Glistening Waters Restaurant and Marina in Falmouth, Trelawny.

The honourees are: James Carman Wright from Hanover, William James Benjamin from St. Elizabeth, Jeremiah Reid, St. James; Irvin George Green, Westmoreland; Lennox Paul Napier, Trelawny and student, Jodykay Amoy Maxwell, who received the Governor General’s Award for Excellence.

Miss Maxwell will be leaving Jamaica shortly to pursue studies at Cambridge University in the United Kingdom.

The Governor General said that since its inception 22 years ago, the Achievement Awards Programme has recognised persons, “for their altruistic efforts to build up their respective communities and to contribute to making life better for the residents of these areas”.

“They were able to accomplish this despite their humble backgrounds and the challenges they had to overcome in order to achieve their personal growth and development,” he stated.

“It was their love and concern for their brothers and sisters that propelled them to embark on meaningful projects and activities, which demonstrated their caring desire to improve the lot of other members of their communities. Thus they engaged in, and oftentimes spearheaded programmes and activities, which contributed to the human development of the residents, the improved standard of living in towns and villages, the engendering of a spirit of volunteerism … and the development of a community that is united,” the Governor General added.

He called for these qualities to be adopted by all citizens, so that Jamaica can realize its Vision 2030 goal, which is to be the country of choice for living, working, raising families, and doing business.
