Sir Vivian Promotes Responsible Drinking

March 22, 2007

The Full Story

To help promote the importance of responsible drinking during ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, members of the media were treated to an interactive cricket experience with former West Indies captain and ambassador for the Johnnie Walker ‘Know Your Boundaries’ programme, Sir Vivian Richards, on March 20.
The event, which was held at the Red Stripe Oval, Spanish Town Road in Kingston, afforded media personnel an opportunity to talk cricket with Sir Vivian as well as to ‘bat for charity’.
As part of the ‘Know Your Boundaries’ programme, Johnny Walker donated $1 million for the first batsman to hit six consecutive ‘sixes’ during the current CWC, to Habitat for Humanity International.
This feat was achieved by South African batsman, Herschelle Gibbs during the match against The Netherlands at Warner Park, Basseterre, St. Kitts on March 16.
In an interview with JIS News, Marketing Communications Manager at Red Stripe, Kim Lee pointed out that the main aim of the campaign was to promote responsible drinking, not only in Jamaica but throughout the Caribbean, especially during the tournament.
“We want our consumers as well as the Caribbean to be mindful of their boundaries. They need to know when to drink and that they need to have a designated driver,” she reiterated.
According to Miss Lee, the Johnnie Walker ‘Know Your Boundaries’ campaign is being carried out in all nine countries that are currently hosting the games. Expressing his support for the campaign, Sir Vivian noted that the campaign message of responsible drinking could help to preserve life. “I believe we are a little bit too relaxed when it comes to drinking and driving and if we are going to drink, we must be responsible,” he added.
Commenting on who he thinks will win the tournament, Sir Vivian said that would depend on the team who consistently performed well throughout the tournament.”There are several teams in this tournament who are magnificent teams. It depends on who plays well and plays well to the very end and is basically consistent about what they want to get done,” he noted.
Habitat for Humanity International is an ecumenical Christian ministry that is dedicated to eliminating poverty worldwide. The non-profit organization builds and renovates simple, decent homes all over the world, including several Caribbean countries such as Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua and Barbuda, through volunteer labour and donations.
