Show Your Love for Children on Labour Day – Grange

Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Olivia Grange, has called on Jamaicans to demonstrate their love for the country’s youngest citizens, by working on projects, which focus on children on Labour Day.
“Let us, with the help of the Almighty, use this week and Labour Day, next Monday (May 24), to reaffirm our commitment to our children and to demonstrate to them how much they mean to us. They are our children. We must show them we care and so, find a cause or a project and volunteer on Labour Day,” she urged.
Miss Grange was speaking at the Workers’ Week and Labour Day 2010 thanksgiving service, which was held today (May 16) at the Seaview Chapel in Harbour View, St. Andrew. Workers’ Week, which begins today, culminates with Labour Day, which is being observed under the theme: ‘Our Children.Show Them We Care’.
Minister Grange said that the national projects, which have been increased from six to 14 this year, will be supported by the Department of Local Government and municipal authorities across the country.

“Decentralising the activity in this way is part of government’s commitment to increasing the participation of citizens in building communities,” she noted.
Minister Grange commended private and public sector entities as well as volunteers, for their support of the work to be carried out and appealed for other groups and individuals to play their part.
“Every one of you in this congregation can take on a project and play your part,” she said.
President of the East Jamaica Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Pastor Adrian Cotterell, in his sermon, called on parents, communities, churches and institutions, to show that they care for “our children” by working together to reduce teenage pregnancy, out-of wedlock births, crime, drugs and gun running, and the break down of values and attitude.
“The government cannot do what we are supposed to do to show we care. We cannot substitute our personal responsibility to care for the nation’s children, for that of the Government, the church and child advocacy institutions,” he said.
The first lesson was read by Minister of Labour and Social Security, Hon. Pearnel Charles, representing Prime Minister, the Hon. Bruce Golding, while Senator Sandrea Falconer read the second lesson on behalf of Opposition Leader, Hon. Portia Simpson Miller.
Brief remarks were made by the Custos of Kingston, Steadman Fuller, who represented Governor-General, His Excellency the Most Hon. Sir Patrick Allen.
