The Full Story

Several activities have been planned by the Portland Disaster Committee to mark January as Earthquake Awareness Month under the theme: ‘Earthquakes have no season – do your part, be earthquake smart’.
Activities during the month, which comprise Earthquake Awareness Week observances from January 11- 17, will include educational talks and earthquake drills in schools, hotels, and offices.
Schools involved in the programme include Belleview, Hope Bay, and St. Margaret’s Bay All-age; Norwich Primary; Shebian Preparatory; and Port Antonio, and Buff Bay High.
The hotels selected for the activities are the Fern Hill Hotel and Goblin Hill Villas, while the offices are those at the Port Antonio branch of the Jamaica National Building Society; the Eastern Portland Electoral Office, the Ministry of Education’s Regional Office at Passley Gardens; and the College of Agriculture, Science, and Education, also in Passley Gardens.
A special earthquake awareness talk and drill is also scheduled for the Portland High School in Port Antonio, as the main event for Earthquake Awareness Day in schools on Wednesday, January 14.
Speaking to JIS News, Portland’s Disaster Coordinator, Denise Lewis, expressed confidence that the month of events will go a far way in increasing the awareness of residents about earthquake and the actions necessary to mitigate their effects.
Noting that the events are spread across various communities in order to involve as many persons as possible, Mrs. Lewis exhorted the residents of the parish to give their fullest support to the programme in order to ensure its success.
