In celebration of National Diabetes Week, to be observed from November 12 to 18, the St. Elizabeth branch of the Diabetes Association of Jamaica will be hosting a series of activities under the theme: ‘Diabetes Care for Everyone’. The week will commence with a church service on Sunday, November 12, at the Bethel Gospel Chapel in Southfield, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
Co-ordinator of the St. Elizabeth branch of the Diabetes Association of Jamaica, Nurse Novelette Berlin, informed JIS News that, “during Diabetes Week, we will be doing a lot of educational and awareness talks to patients [about different aspects of the disease], at the Southfield health centre”. These sessions will be held on November 14, 16 and 17.
“The Diabetes Association will be having its day at the centre at Pedro Plains on Saturday, November 18, beginning at 9:30 a.m. We will be having a day of free consultations on diabetes, free blood pressure checks and free foot screening,” she added.
Miss Berlin said that in the following week, there would be a special awards ceremony for six volunteers who began working with the branch since 2001.
National Diabetes Week and World Diabetes Day activities are organized to heighten the awareness of persons, as the disease affects one out of every five persons in the country.
