Seven Elevators to be Installed in Hospitals

Cabinet has approved a contract in the sum of $48.22 million to Jamaica Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Limited, to purchase and install seven elevators at hospitals in the Western Regional Health Authority (WRHA).
Making the announcement at the post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House yesterday (February 8), Minister of Information and Development, Donald Buchanan explained that four of the elevators would be installed at the Cornwall Regional Hospital, while two would be located at the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital, and one new hydraulic elevator would be installed at the Falmouth Hospital.
“All of these are intended to make the facilities more comfortable and accessible for patients and personnel of the institutions, and visitors,” Mr. Buchanan said.
A contract for $53.46 million was also approved to provide security services over a period of three years at the Bustamante Hospital for Children in Kingston.
“This is to provide the necessary security at this institution, in keeping with our assurance to patients and personnel, with respect to safety, as well as to ensure the security of the property,” the Minister noted. The contractor is Securicor Jamaica Limited.
Meanwhile, a contract in the amount of $33.37 million was also approved by Cabinet for the installation of distribution pipelines for the Darliston Water Supply Project. The contract, which has been awarded to Frederick Rodrigues and Associates, will last for 20 weeks, providing the distribution network for the supply of water in the Darliston Hills and its environs.
“It is part of the overall development of that water supply system, which sources water from the Roaring River plant, and for which substantial expenditure has taken place, over time, providing for an additional two million gallons of water per day – one million going to the hills of Westmoreland and the other one million being provided to augment the supply on the Westmoreland plains,” Mr. Buchanan explained.
He noted that the Rural Water Supply Company had been created for the purpose of supplying water to rural communities, and that this was one of the major projects being undertaken by the entity in the 2006/07 and the 2007/08 fiscal periods.
