Senior Citizens to Benefit from Brown’s Town Elderly Celebration and Social Fair

More than 500 senior citizens are expected to benefit from the ninth annual Brown’s Town Elderly Celebration and Social Fair 2025, set to take place on Thursday (February 27) at the Brown’s Town Community Centre in St. Ann, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

The event, being hosted by the Social Development Commission (SDC) in partnership with the Brown’s Town Community Development Committee (CDC) and a coalition of local stakeholders, is designed to address the needs of seniors and indigent residents.

This year’s celebration will offer a variety of interactive activities designed to entertain and engage the community.

Attendees will also benefit from vital wellness services, including free medical check-ups, mental health workshops, grooming sessions, and legal guidance seminars.

Executive Director, SDC, Omar Frith told JIS News that the event has evolved over the years.

“What began in 2010 as a modest feeding programme has grown into a holistic celebration of intergenerational unity, thanks to the sustained collaboration with the Brown’s Town CDC, businesses, churches, government agencies and other stakeholders,” he said.

“Our elders are the architects of our nation’s progress and this nine-year journey underscores SDC’s resolve to preserve their legacy while addressing their evolving needs,” Mr. Frith added.

He informed that a major feature of the day will be the awards ceremony, where 20 senior citizens will be honoured for their contributions at two levels – community development through sports and community development through public service.

“This recognition celebrates their dedication to uplifting their communities,” Mr. Frith said.

“Join us in celebrating these living legends. Their stories are our history, and their legacy is our future. Through initiatives like this, the SDC continues to champion empathy-driven development, proving that honouring the past is the cornerstone of a thriving tomorrow,” he added.

Meanwhile, SDC’s St. Ann Parish Manager, Hillory McBayne informed that the fair also serves as a vital resource hub for the elderly population, as attendees can access the services of the HEART/NSTA Trust, the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA).

“By collaborating with these entities, we are able to provide essential services and programmes that empower our seniors and support their well-being,” Ms. McBayne said.
