Senator Warren Newby to Address Optimist Conference

Senator Warren Newby, Parliamentary Secretary with responsibility for Youth in the Ministry of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports will deliver the keynote address at the Governor’s Welcome Reception for the start of the First Quarter Conference of the Caribbean District of Optimist International Friday, November 23 at the Hilton Kingston Hotel.
The Conference will include training sessions, consider reports and conduct other business of the 17 Zones spanning the Caribbean Optimist District.
The Business Sessions on Saturday and Sunday which will be chaired by Governor Granville Newell, will have powerful speakers such as Vice President of Optimist International Shirley Jarrett, who created history when she was elected the first woman Governor of the Caribbean District in 1999-2000. International Vice President Shirley is making her official visit to the region. Also on the panel of speakers is Her Honour Justice Paula Blake-Powell.
Optimist International is a service organisation with more than 3,000 clubs and over 100,000 members serving in 37 countries. It is community-based and focuses on youth, providing assistance worth 78-million United States dollars to six million young people annually through community service projects.
History is also being created in the organization internationally with the ascendancy of Jamaica’s and the Caribbean’s Theodore Golding to the top position of Optimist International. Not only is Mr. Golding the first person from outside of North America to be elected President of the 88-year-old Optimist International, he is the first black person.
Mr. Golding is a retired banker with considerable business experience and he was a among a handful of persons instrumental in introducing the Optimist International service clubs to Jamaica and the English-speaking Caribbean.
There are now just under one-hundred Optimist clubs in the Region with more than 3,000 members.
