Senator Dr. Saphire Longmore Calls for Jamaicans to Reinforce Morality, Family and Community Spirit

Senator Longmore says it is an unfortunate reflection of what is happening within our society by unsavoury elements amongst us.

Appalled by the heinous crimes inflicted on our women and children, she says she feels the pain and frustration of families who are hurt by crime.

“I know it is not for a lack of political will. The Government of which I am a part wants to see Jamaicans safe in their homes and on our streets. We are doing our part to deal with policy directives. In my unique capacity as a Senator, woman, mother and psychiatrist, I am calling on all Jamaicans to return to our sense of morality to prevent these heinous acts,” urged Senator Longmore.

The Government Senator noted that efforts to strengthen the economy, increase employment and social services are being pursued. However, citizens must begin to help in protecting each other.

“As a society, we must fight back as a society and take a stand against the violence. Don’t be an abuser, don’t be an element of division. Citizens, we must be more mindful and make reports of any unusual activity in our neighbourhoods. Encourage our children, young women and citizens at large to walk in groups wherever they may be going,” said Senator Longmore.

The Government Senator called on party goers to take up the challenge of ensuring event organisers abide by the law and admit only those who are legally able to attend these sessions.

She urged persons to communicate and protect each other. She noted that the sobering reality is that a significant proportion of our crime is domestic violence and usually stems from basic misunderstanding and poor communication.

“If negative relations exist, seek the help that is available to address it. Establish secret family codes for security purposes, sit and plan what to do in an emergency. Apply curfews for your children, know where they are going and who they are with, establish secret codes/words to use in the event of an emergency. Play together rather than fight each other,” concluded Senator Longmore.

Senator Longmore urged Jamaicans to return to the moral bases of family and community.
