Schools Encouraged to Implement Regular Fire Drills

The Manchester Division of the Jamaica Fire Brigade has been encouraging schools across the parish to implement regular fire drills.
This is in keeping with Fire Safety Awareness Week, which is being observed from October 25-30 under the theme: ‘Fire prevention.develop the habit’.
Fire Prevention Officer, Corporal Juliane Davis-Buckle told JIS News that so far, several persons have been visiting the Mandeville headquarters to view a special fire exhibition mounted there.
“In addition, our public information talks have been going very well. So far we have conducted a number of sessions in schools, and at a few golden age homes,” she said.
Corporal Davis-Buckle noted that some of the topics discussed with the students included basic fire safety and how to handle a fire extinguisher.
“We inform them about what to do should your clothes catch fire, basic practices to implement at the home to prevent fires, such as having a proper escape plan as well as a whistle or horn to wake family members, once an emergency has occurred,” she said.
Corporal Davis-Buckle added that information was provided on the requirements needed in order to enrol in the fire services.
“Students are told that one has to be between the age of 18 and 28 years; be at least 165 centimetres in height and have at least 4 G.C.E, 4 CXC or 5 SSC subjects, in order to qualify,” she said.
