Rural Community to Benefit from Weather Impact Project

A rural farming community is to benefit from a project that will aid in strengthening its resilience to the impact of weather-related issues.
The project, which is to be rolled out in July, follows the successful completion of a pilot of a micro insurance facility, aimed at small farmers in Portland and St. Thomas. The pilot was facilitated by the German funded Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII).
Making the announcement during his contribution to the 2013/14 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives on June 26, Minister of Water, Land, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Robert Pickersgill, informed that the project would be officially launched in the fourth quarter of this year.
“This is our way of seeking new ways to help our vulnerable farmers build resilience, specifically against rain and wind impacts,” the Minister said.
Mr. Pickersgill noted that his Ministry would be working with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) to implement the project.
