Robertson Says Country Must Remain Committed to MDGs

Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister, James Robertson has said that the Government, and the nation, must remain committed to meeting the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and make every effort to reduce the economic gap.
Mr. Robertson, who was making his presentation in the 2008/9 Sectoral Debate in the House, today (July 9), noted that the MDGs speak to matters such as access to education, water and sanitation, access to resources, reduction of debt, the fight against HIV/AIDS, empowerment, and gender equity.
“In other words, we are speaking about reducing inequalities between the haves and the have-nots,” he emphasised.
The Minister added that as a signatory to the United Nations millennium declaration, the country is committed to doing its part in a new global partnership to reduce extreme poverty in all its dimensions.
“It is a fact that poverty affects half the world’s population, and this is spreading. We can expect that with the current world food and oil crises, that the situation will only get worse,” he explained.
