Road Maintenance Fund Spent in Excess Of $390 Million to Upgrade Roads in 2004/05

The Full Story

For the 2004/05 Financial Year, in excess of $390 million was allocated to the Road Maintenance Fund to carry out road improvements, with the National Works Agency (NWA) effecting repairs to approximately 390,000 square metres of roadway across the island.
Transport and Works Minister, Robert Pickersgill made this disclosure, yesterday (June 14), during his presentation in the 2005/06 Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives.
The Fund, he informed, approved $112 million to effect maintenance work in various parishes, while an additional $98 million was approved by the Fund’s Board to carry out improvement work at road junctions, which experts felt were of crucial importance to the smooth movement of traffic through some corridors.
He cited the corridor between Ruthven and Oxford Roads along Half-Way-Tree Road, and the Monroe Road/Old Hope Road, as the two major projects undertaken by the NWA last year, and noted that both have been met with satisfaction from the motoring and pedestrian public.
“Motorists and pedestrians have found the improvements useful and timely, since the travelling time and the traffic congestion, which previously occurred in those areas, have been drastically reduced,” Minister Pickersgill said.
Turning to projects under construction, he outlined that road improvement works were scheduled for the Constant Spring Road and Dunrobin Avenue junction and corridor; Shortwood and Constant Spring Roads; Barbican Road and the junction at Russell Heights; and the expansion of the bridge at East King’s House Road.
Although several road improvement projects have been carried out by the Road Maintenance Fund, the Minister pointed out that the Fund was also constrained by limited resources.
He said that for the 2005/06 fiscal year, it is anticipated that there would not be an increase in the Fund’s income, but there would be increases in the cost of the imported and locally produced raw materials.
