Road From Stokesfield To Plantain Garden River Closed

October 22, 2010

The Full Story

Motorists are being advised that the main road from Stokesfield to Plantain Garden River in St. Thomas is closed.
This has resulted from the closure of the Harbour Head Bridge, which has collapsed under the weight of a truck ladened with construction material. The Harbour Head Bridge has a weight restriction of 12 tonnes, which was exceeded.
Persons travelling beyond the community of Pear Tree River are being asked to use the alternative route from Harbour Head to Bowden.
Manager of Communication and Customer Service at the National Works Agency (NWA), Stephen Shaw, told JIS News that motorists using the alternative route should exercise caution while traversing this corridor, sections of which require some remedial work.
He noted that the NWA is currently looking at carrying out some work on the alternative route, and that action to replace the collapsed bridge has started.
Mr. Shaw pointed out that the replacement bridge is in storage, and that construction of the new bridge will be included as part of the Jamaica Development Infrastructure Programme (JDIP).
