RGD Hosts Cultural Exhibition Oct. 13 – 15

In keeping with the observation of Heritage Week, the Registrar General’s Department (RGD) is hosting a three-day cultural exhibition at its Kingston office from October 13 – 15.
Manager at the Island Record Office, Joyce Brown told JIS News that the exhibition would feature displays about the National Heroes and other famous Jamaicans who have contributed significantly to the development of the country.
Miss Brown added that the exhibition would highlight some of the RGD’s oldest records, some dating as far back as the year 1660. There would also be displays on some of Jamaica’s famous athletes.Students in particular, are set to benefit from extensive genealogical information on national heroes and other significant characters.
The exhibition, now in its seventh year, will educate the public on the services offered by the RGD.”There are some persons who believe that the RGD is solely about births, marriages and deaths. But there is a lot more to that, so we would love to feature the other services as well,” she said.
“We would also like to increase the awareness of the importance of registration, particularly as it relates to the placement of the father’s name on the child’s birth certificate,” Miss Brown added.
The exhibition will be opened to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. over the three-day period, with the official opening ceremony on Thursday, October 14 at 10:30 a.m.
“It’s very informative and we really want to share with the wider community, this whole matter of celebrating our heritage,” she said.
