Revitalization Programme for Spanish Town

The historic Spanish Town is slated to undergo a comprehensive programme of revitalisation, which will be centred on the areas of heritage tourism, art and culture, and entertainment.
Minister of Information and Development, Donald Buchanan, who made the disclosure during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in the House of Representatives yesterday (June 5), said that the revitalization programme, called ‘Renaissance One’ will be facilitated through the proposed Spanish Town Redevelopment Company.
“This company will be a private/public sector partnership, and will manage the programme of redevelopment and revitalization with the authority emanating from the Local Planning Authority,” he explained.
Investors in Renaissance One, he said, will be able to take advantage of incentives under the Urban Renewal Tax Relief Act, Jamaica National Heritage Trust Act, Tourism Incentives Act, and the Free Zone Act.
According to the Minister, “great emphasis will also be placed on community development in order to ensure that the benefits of the programme are felt through out the community.”
Specific communities that will be targeted in the initial phases of the programme are Tawes Pen; Ellerslie Pen; Rivoli; Waterloo Lane and Close; Railway Lands; Dallas; De la Vega City; March Pen Road; Africa; St. John’s Road; Jobs lane; Willowdene; Central Village; Thompson Pen/Greendale; Big Lane; Shelter Rock; Morgan’s Lane; Gordon Pen; Duncan’s Pen; Old Road and Windsor Road.
