Residents of Portland urged to be proactive against dengue

Residents of Portland are being urged to be proactive against mosquito infestation in their communities, to prevent the spread of dengue fever.
The call came from Vector Control Inspector at Portland Health Services, Carlton Blake, while addressing a dengue public education meeting in Prospect, Port Antonio, on Thursday (October 28).
Mr. Blake said that even as fogging activities continue in communities, residents must also play their part by eliminating mosquito breeding sites in and around their homes to ensure that the mosquito population does not increase. He urged them to get rid of old tyres, tins and bottles, around their yards, which can hold water, and keep all drains clear so that water can flow freely.
Mr. Blake also called on the residents to ensure that their doors and windows are open during fogging to allow the chemical to permeate their homes. “This method will eliminate the adult mosquitoes,” he informed.
The session included contribution from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, with Acting National Insurance Administrator for Port Antonio, Michael Morrison, outlining the many benefits available within his department.
These include benefits for: widows, orphans, special child, dismemberment and invalidity, among others. Mr. Morrison urged persons to make their contributions in order to qualify for these benefits.
Also addressing the meeting were members of the Portland Fire Department, who informed the residents about safety measures to reduce the outbreak of fire in their homes and communities.
