Repair work on the Lakes Pen to Grange Hill main road in St. Catherine is 90 per cent complete and the project is way ahead of its April 20 delivery date.

The four-month works contract was awarded to ALCAR Construction & Haulage Company on December 14, 2004 and work began on the 4.3 kilometre roadway on January 5, said Vando Palmer communications manager at the National Works Agency (NWA).

Mr. Palmer informed JIS News, that the roadway was being totally rehabilitated at an estimated cost of $59 million.

“The works include the construction of a comprehensive drainage system, rehabilitation of road surface and surfacing utilizing asphaltic concrete,” he said.

With just seven weeks since construction has started, all culverts, earth drains and side drains have been cleaned, additional earth drains have been constructed and sub-base and base work have been completed.

The road surface, he said, has also been primed and the asphaltic concrete overlay is 60 per cent complete.

Mr. Palmer said the project was about eight weeks ahead of schedule and that the contractor would continue to surface the roadway, construct head and toe wall, repair entrances and install guardrails to meet the deadline.

He has cautioned motorists to obey the warning signals and to exercise care when using the roadway.

Giving an update on the rehabilitation of the Freetown to Alley main road in Clarendon, Mr. Palmer said that the project was 21 per cent complete six weeks after work started on that roadway.

The three-month contract was signed by BF Pavement & Consultants Ltd on December 14, 2005 and work began on the 23.75 kilometre stretch on January 10, 2005.

The works are expected to cost some $24.1 million.

Mr. Palmer informed JIS News that the 2.5 kilometre stretch was being totally rehabilitated, with special emphasis placed on improving the drainage system in that area.

“The works also include bushing and cleaning of all earth drains, side drains and culverts, rehabilitation of road surface and surfacing utilizing asphaltic concrete,” he said.

He further noted that already all culverts, earth drains and side drains have been cleaned and the roadsides bushed along the entire 23.75 kilometres of roadway.

Mr. Palmer told JIS News that the contractor had just completed sub-base works such as depositing of fill material, spreading, wetting and compressing fill material.

Excavation work for u-drains is also underway.
