‘Rally For Reading’ At Lawrence Park April 30

The St. Ann Parish Library in St. Ann’s Bay will be staging a reading session titled, ‘Rally for Reading’, at Lawrence Park in the town, on Friday, April 30, as part of activities to mark Reading Week (April 26 – May 1).
About eight schools in close proximity to the town will take part in the event, with students speaking on the topic, ‘The Benefits of Reading’.
The schools are St. Ann’s Bay Primary, Columbus Preparatory, St. Ann’s Bay High, Priory Primary, Steer Town Primary, Steer Town Junior High, Marjam Preparatory and Runaway Bay Primary.
Senior Librarian, Marjorie Rutherford, told JIS News that the main objective of the event was to highlight the importance of reading as well as to encourage the students to read.
She said the rally, which would commence at 9:30 a.m., would begin with a street march at the St. Ann’s Bay Court House on Main Street, followed by the actual event at Lawrence Park, where the reading presentations would be interspersed with cultural items, including songs, poetry and dance.
Reading Week is an annual event observed by libraries across the island, with the aim of encouraging students to select books at the libraries for reading, in an effort to promote a culture of reading.
