The Agricultural Produce Receipt Book is a simple system designed to help the police verify the legitimacy of agricultural produce. How it works is that farmers will issue a receipt to buyers of produce. If the buyer is stopped by the police, he or she can show the police their receipt, to verify that the goods were purchased and not stolen.

Thieves have been a thorn in the flesh of farmers for years. The government’s response to the problem has included the implementation of the Agricultural Produce Receipt Book System. Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries Audley Shaw says for the system to work, the police must demand receipts from persons travelling with goods across the island.

Six young people from St. Ann, St. Elizabeth and Manchester are benefitting from the Jamaica Bauxite Institute JBI/RIO Tinto/Alcan Legacy Fund, RTLAF Scholarships. After graduating, the scholarship recipients will be better able to successfully carry out green house production and would advise farmers in production and management.
