Natural shorelines are the undeveloped fringe areas along the edge of a water body. They connect the shallow aquatic portion of the water body with adjacent upland. These areas provide important environmental functions, such as regulating water quality, including temperature, clarity, nutrients, and contaminants. Additionally, they sustain critical habitat for a variety of organisms, such as invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, shorebirds and waterfowl, and mammals.
