The historical architecture of deliberate colonial hegemony has institutionalized structural dependencies, permanently relegating Caribbean economies to the primary sector of global value chains. Because of how colonialism was set up, Caribbean countries are still trapped at the very bottom of the global trade ladder. They do all the heavy lifting by exporting massive amounts of cheap raw materials. Then, wealthy nations buy those materials, turn them into expensive luxury goods, and pocket all the real profit. (Sounds familiar?)
