In 2004, it became a requirement for all civil aviation airports to become certified. Also in 2004, the Norman Manley International Airport began its journey of achieving the Aerodrome Operator Certificate. Fifteen years later, the certification has been achieved. The certificate validates that the airport is operating at a standard recognized and held by the international Civil Aviation Organisation ICAO, the international body that governs the development of civil aviation worldwide.
