Rachel Manley to Headline Event at New York Public Library

Jamaicans, Rachel Manley and Professor Orlando Patterson will be hosted by the New York Public Library’s (NYPL) Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Centre for Scholars and Writers on Wednesday, April 21, at the South Court Auditorium in Midtown Manhattan. Professor Patterson will interview Miss Manley about her work, her family and the politics and culture of Jamaica.
Jean Strouse, Director at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Centre at the NYPL, spoke of the excitement surrounding the upcoming event.
“We are thrilled to be hosting a conversation between two such distinguished Jamaicans.Orlando Patterson, a brilliant scholar and prize winning author.and Rachel Manley, the author of two superb memoirs,” Miss Strouse said.
Miss Manley has two memoirs to her credit, ‘Drumblair: Memories of a Jamaican Childhood’, which received Canada’s Governor General’s Award for non-fiction; and ‘Slipstream: A Daughter Remembers’. A former Fellow of the Bunting Institute and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, Miss Manley is currently a Mel and Lois Turkman Fellow of the Cullman Centre.
Professor Patterson is himself an author and his many publications include, ‘Freedom: Freedom in the Making of Western Culture’, which won the National Book Award for non-fiction in 1991. At present he is the John Cowles Professor of Sociology at Harvard University.
Professor Patterson also served as Special Advisor for Social Policy and Development under Prime Minister Michael Manley from 1972 – 1980.
