Projects being Registered in Hanover for Labour Day

Fifteen Labour Day projects have so far been registered with the Hanover Labour Day Planning Committee.
At a meeting of the committee on May 4, at the Hanover Parish Council offices, it was also announced that the Hanover Labour Day Parish Project would be the refurbishing of sanitary facilities at the Mt. Hannah, Clifton, Pondside and Bamboo Missionary Basic Schools.
Labour Day is being observed on Monday, May 23 under the theme: ‘Prepare for Disaster, Recover Faster’, with emphasis on the environment, through the planting of trees and cleaning of drains. Emergency shelters will also be repaired.
In an interview with JIS News, Chairman of the Labour Day Planning Committee in Hanover, Mayor of Lucea, Lester Crooks, pointed out that the drain cleaning programme within the parish was an on-going one, but would be stepped up for the occasion.
Commenting on the work to be carried out at the basic schools, the Mayor said that “proper precautions must be taken toward the health of the young children in the basic schools, as they are very susceptible at that tender age”. He added that other agencies would also be carrying out work on other basic school facilities throughout the parish.
“I am going personally to those communities to meet with the Parent Teacher Associations to sit with them and let them be aware of the necessity of having proper bathroom facilities in these schools,” the Mayor said. He expressed the hope that his talks with the community members would motivate them enough to give their full support for the planned activities. He appealed to the general public to get involved in Labour Day activities in their area, adding that such activities would help to bring back the parish of Hanover to its former glory.
The Mayor also called on the business sector within the parish to contribute as much as possible to the projects being undertaken.
Education Officer in the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture, Region Four, Joy Beckford, lauded members of the Committee for their plans to assist the basic schools, adding that their focus was key to having proper infrastructure and a good learning environment for the children.
