Project to Manage Natural Resources gets $19 Million

A provision of $19.08 million has been made available to fund the Environmental Action Plan for Jamaica Project, as outlined in the 2007/08 Estimates of Expenditure, now before the House of Representatives. The project seeks to promote sustainable development in Jamaica by supporting capacity development of key Jamaican organisations involved in the decision making, management, and use of Jamaica’s natural resources.
It also aims to improve the capability of key strategic players at the government policy, private sector, community and general public levels to identify and solve their environmental problems in a sustainable way.
Anticipated targets for the fiscal year 2007/08 include the publication, communication and dissemination of Environmental Stewardship Policy and Guidelines; supporting the implementation of the multi agency of enforcement strategy; continue to build on processes, policies, and to develop a public awareness strategy for the National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA). Achievements as of March 2007 include the training of over 200 persons from the public and private sectors in environmental management; support for the revision and update of the Government of Jamaica Environmental stewardship; support for the development of a manual on enforcement and compliance for environmental laws; and support for local authorities, their parish development committee counterparts and national agencies to undertake sustainable development planning.
The project is being implemented by NEPA, with funding from the Government and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
