Prince Treated to ‘Jamaica Night’ at Sandals Cay

The third day of activities in the four-day official visit to Jamaica by His Royal Highness, Prince Henry of Wales (always known as Prince Harry) ended in fine style last night (March 7), with a Jamaica night event at the Sandals Cay in Montego Bay.

The function, organised jointly by the government in partnership with Sandals Resorts, included several performances of Jamaican dance forms spanning the Ska era through to Reggae.

Among the performers were the Catherine Hall Primary and the Mount Alvernia High schools. Violinist, Nadjae Leslie, performed a number of Jamaican songs. A wide array of the country’s fine cuisine was also available, of which guests eagerly partook.

Minister of National Security, Hon. Peter Bunting, who hosted the event on behalf of the government, said it was a pleasure to be welcoming His Royal Highness to Montego Bay, as part of the celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen.

“His Royal Highness has worked very hard and has had a lot of adventures since he’s been in Jamaica and I am sure that he is looking forward to the entertainment and a more relaxed evening here tonight. When we met last evening at King’s House, His Royal Highness expressed his enthusiasm to come to the north coast and to be here in Montego Bay”. 

“The only regret that we have is that you can’t stay longer with us and we look forward to your future visits and that you extend the congratulations, love and affection of the people of Jamaica to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family,” Minister Bunting said.

Chief Executive Officer of Sandals Resort, Adam Stewart, also expressed appreciation to the Prince for “taking the time to come to our little country Jamaica and also for taking the time to come to Sandals and to see a little bit of what it’s all about over here”.

Custos of St. James, Hon. Ewen Corrodus, also added his words of welcome to Prince Harry, noting that “It’s a pleasure to have you here with us”.

His Royal Highness moved around and greeted several guests, including members of the media fraternity, before retreating to a private dinner on the island.

Others in attendance were Minister of State in the Ministry of Tourism and Entertainment, Hon. Damion Crawford; and Chairman of Sandals Resorts, Hon. Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart.

Prince Harry, who arrived in Jamaica on Monday (March 5), departs from the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay at about 5:00 pm today.
